Face Shape Detector: what is my face shape?

Upload one selfie and we place 478 points on your face, measure four ratios, and tell you which of the seven face shapes you are closest to — oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong or triangle. It is free, needs no sign-up, and shows the numbers behind the answer.

How the face shape detector works

  1. 1

    Take a selfie

Face the camera at eye level with your hair off your forehead. We check the angle on the spot and ask for a retake if your head is turned.

  2. 2

    We measure 4 ratios

478 points are placed on your face in your browser, then four ratios are calculated: length to width, forehead, jaw and jaw angle.

  3. 3

    Get your face shape

Your numbers are compared with the seven face shapes. You get the closest one, plus a “leaning” shape when two are close.

The 4 measurements behind your result

These are the same numbers our app shows on your result card.

Blue lines: forehead, cheekbones, jaw, length

Length ÷ width

How it's measured: Forehead top to chin, divided by the width across your cheekbones.

What it means: Around 1.38 is typical. Below about 1.30 reads as round or square; above about 1.48 reads as oblong (long).

Forehead ÷ cheek

How it's measured: Width across your temples, divided by cheekbone width.

What it means: Around 0.87 is typical. A wider forehead (0.90+) points to heart; a narrow one (0.84 or less) to diamond or triangle.

Jaw ÷ cheek

How it's measured: Width across the corners of your jaw, divided by cheekbone width.

What it means: Around 0.80 is typical. A wide jaw (0.83+) points to square or triangle; a narrow one (0.78 or less) to heart or diamond.

Jaw angle

How it's measured: The angle at the corner of your jaw, between the cheekbone and the chin.

What it means: Around 136° is typical. A smaller angle (133° or less) means a sharper, squarer jaw; a larger one means a softer, rounder jaw.

The 7 face shapes

Each example face below was measured with our detector. Typical ratios are shown under each shape.

How to measure your face shape at home

No photo? You can measure the same four things with a soft tape measure and a mirror.

  1. Forehead: measure straight across between the outer ends of your eyebrows, about halfway up your forehead.
  2. Cheekbones: measure across the widest point of your cheekbones, just below the outer corners of your eyes.
  3. Jaw: measure from the corner of your jaw below one ear to the same point on the other side.
  4. Length: measure from your hairline to the bottom of your chin.

Then compare: if length is only a little more than cheekbone width, your face is round or square (square if your jaw is nearly as wide as your cheekbones). If length is clearly more, it is oval or oblong. If your forehead is the widest, it leans heart; if your cheekbones are the widest with a narrow forehead and jaw, it leans diamond; if your jaw is the widest, it leans triangle.

Hand measurements are rough because the hairline and jaw corners are hard to find on yourself. The detector above measures the same points from a photo in about 30 seconds.

Why face shape tools give different answers

There is no official definition of each face shape, so two tools — or two stylists — can disagree about the same face. Most faces also sit between two shapes rather than squarely in one.

We deal with that in two ways. First, the result is repeatable: the same photo always gives the same numbers, because it comes from measurements rather than a guess. Second, we show those numbers and tell you when a second shape is close, for example “Oval, leaning Oblong” (this example face measured 1.44 length to width). Haircuts that suit both shapes are usually your safest choice.

Once you know your shape, see haircuts by face shape, or go straight to haircuts for round faces.

How we tested it

What we can and cannot claim about accuracy.

100%same result every time for the same photo — it is a calculation, not a guess
23/30photos kept the same face shape after we flipped, shrank (60%) and rotated (5°) them
27/30stayed within the result or its “leaning” shape under the same changes

We tested the detector on 30 real selfies of different ages, ethnicities and hair types, then changed each photo slightly to see whether the answer moved. When it did, the result usually swapped with its “leaning” shape (for example oval and diamond), which is why we always show both.

What we do not claim: there is no official, labelled dataset of face shapes, so we do not publish a single “accuracy” percentage. The seven shapes are defined from common stylist rules and calibrated on our test photos. If a result looks wrong to you, the four measurements are shown so you can judge for yourself — and haircuts that suit both of your top shapes are the safe choice.

Photos work best straight on, at eye level, with hair off the forehead. A turned head (more than 20°) or a tilted head (more than 25°) is rejected and you are asked to retake it.

Questions, answered

Short answers first. Measurements come from our own face shape tool.

How does the face shape detector work?

It finds 478 points on your face in a selfie and measures four ratios: face length to width, forehead width, jaw width (both against your cheekbones) and the angle at your jaw. Those numbers are compared with seven face shapes, and the closest one is your result.

Is the face shape detector free?

Yes. Your face shape, the four measurements and three haircut previews are free, with no sign-up. Paying is only for the full set of haircuts on your photo.

How accurate is it?

It is repeatable: the same photo always gives the same result. On 30 test selfies that we flipped, shrank and rotated, 23 kept the same face shape and 27 stayed within the result or its "leaning" shape. There is no official labelled dataset of face shapes, so we show the four measurements and tell you when you sit between two shapes instead of quoting a single accuracy number.

What hair details are used to pick haircuts?

Your measured face shape plus your hair type (straight, wavy, curly, coily) and hairline (full, receding, thinning), which are read from the same photo. Both are shown on your result, so you can see why each cut was picked.

Can I delete my photo?

Yes. Before paying, tap "Delete my photo now" on your results and the photo and previews are deleted immediately. After paying, email support@faceshapehaircut.com from your checkout address.

What face shapes can it detect?

Seven: oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong (long) and triangle.

What makes a good photo for measuring?

Face the camera straight on at eye level, in even light, with your hair pushed off your forehead. If your head is turned or the face is hidden, the tool asks for a retake instead of guessing.

Can I find my face shape without a photo?

Yes — measure in a mirror with a tape measure: forehead width, cheekbone width, jaw width and face length, then compare them using the steps on this page. A photo is faster and measures the same four things.

What if I am between two face shapes?

That is common. The result names your closest shape and, when the second is close, says "leaning" toward it. Haircuts that suit both usually work best.

Does my face shape change?

It can shift a little with weight changes, age and facial hair, but the bone structure that sets the jaw and cheekbones stays the same.

Is my photo stored or used for AI training?

Your photo is stored privately only to show your results and is never used to train AI. Unpaid photos are deleted after 30 days.

What do I get after the face shape?

Haircuts picked for your shape, hair type and hairline, shown on your own photo. One preview is free; you can unlock 6 to 12 cuts with a barber card for each in a one-time payment.

Find your face shape, then the cut that fits it.
